Keep it moist!
It’s not uncommon for plants to wilt when they’re left without water. If you’re worried about watering a plant too often, try keeping an eye on how much moisture is actually coming off of its leaves. You don’t want to over-water them, but if the potting soil has become dry, be sure to give it some extra attention.
Feeding time!
Most indoor houseplants need fertilizer every month or two. This helps promote new growth and encourages flowering. It also prevents diseases from spreading through the roots. Make sure to follow the directions on your particular brand’s package. Some fertilizers come as liquid sprays, while others require dusts or granules.
Add sun!
Sunlight is essential for most houseplants. They’ll grow more quickly if exposed to at least six hours per day. Plants like bright indirect light are best, so aim toward windows facing south, west, east, north, or southeast. A few hours each way should do the trick. For those who have trouble getting sunlight into their rooms, there are plenty of options available online. Many manufacturers sell solar lights specifically designed to provide supplemental lighting to your plants.
Clean up after yourself!
When you’re done caring for your houseplant, make sure to clean away any dirt or other debris before letting it sit idle. Otherwise, the plant may pick up germs and disease spores from whatever else might be lying around. Be careful not to get your hands dirty; use a soft cloth instead.
Pest control?
Pests can cause damage to both your houseplants and your family members. There are many kinds of insects and mites that love to feed on houseplants. Try using insecticidal soap spray to keep pests away. The smell alone will deter them. Another option would be to place mothballs inside of paper bags and hang these near where the plant lives. Moths won’t eat anything they find smelly.
Repotting season!
Repotting your houseplants during springtime is very important. New growth needs to develop and expand in order to absorb nutrients properly. When repotted, make sure to remove old, dead leaves first. Then fill the holes with fresh potting mix. Finally, add water until the top inch is covered.
Water deeply!
If you notice leaves drooping down, this means the plant isn’t receiving enough water. Take care not to overwater, however. Always check the soil for dampness before adding more water. If the top layer appears dry, wait another 24-48 hours before giving it a second dose.
Prune back!
You don’t want to prune your houseplants too frequently. Instead, choose a time when the plant is dormant (usually winter). If you’re unsure whether it’s time, simply look at the leaves: they’ll appear dull and wilted. Cut off any damaged branches, then add some water. Wait one week before checking again.
Give it a rest!
Plant styling doesn’t mean neglecting your plants. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Houseplants need time to recover from being moved, watered, or pampered. Don’t worry about letting your houseplants languish in their pots for long periods of time. After all, they’ve been waiting patiently for your return.
Enjoy!
Houseplants don’t only help beautify your home. They also improve air quality. Their foliage absorbs toxins, helping to filter out harmful particulates. Plus, the moisture they release helps to prevent mold. So, not only do houseplants make your home more attractive, but they also protect your health.
